Printer Error Triggered Bangladesh Race to Halt Cyber Heist

A printer error first tipped off Bangladesh’s central bank to one of the biggest cyber heists in recent history, according to a complaint filed to police that provided new details on the attempted theft of nearly $1 billion.



Zubair Bin Huda, a joint director of Bangladesh Bank, found the printer tray empty when he looked on the morning of Feb. 5 for confirmations of SWIFT financial transactions that are normally printed automatically overnight. He then tried and failed to print out the messages manually from the SWIFT system, according to his complaint to police, the first step needed to start an official investigation.

Lexmark Supports the EU’s ‘Circular Economy Strategy’ On Recycling

In the UK 24 million homes have a computer or laptop, 90% of these devices are connected to a printer with each of these printers using 2-3 printer cartridges per year. On top of this many offices use laser printers and vast amounts of toner cartridges.

With a call-to-action to the printer cartridge industry in Europe Lexmark have urged all manufacturers and suppliers it to support a range of measures to curb waste and encourage reuse and recycling.

Samsung Acquires Cloud Printing Company PrinterOn

Samsung Electronics has acquired mobile cloud printing company PrinterOn in a bid to enhance its mobile cloud services to the business-to-business market.

PrinterOn Users email documents from their smartphones, tablets or laptops and PrinterOn renders the document in the cloud and securely delivers it to the PrinterOn-enabled printer of choice, where it is then printed after the user enters a secure release code. There are over 10,000 PrinterOn printing locations worldwide. The company also offers private cloud services on-site for customers that require mobile printing but do not want data to leave the secure corporate network.

The acquisition of PrinterOn will boost Samsung’s leadership in the standardization of mobile printing as a founding member of the Mopria Alliance, it said in a statement. A non-profit organisation backed by printer and ink cartridge vendors like Hewlett-Packard, Canon, Adobe and Xerox, Mopria aims to drive standards adoption by mobile, printer and OS industry leaders, and certify products to carry the Mopria brand.

It's Business As Usual As School Holidays Come To An End.

With the long school summer holidays coming to a close, some companies find it a great relief that business gets ‘back to normal’

Companies offering business services tend to factor August into their business plans as a ‘quite month’.  With warmer weather and staff holidays business decisions or purchasing tends to be postponed until September arrives.  “Starting in September” and “I’ll get back to you in September” are common themes.  Even networking tends to slow down with many business networks not bothering to hold August meetings.
